AURORA - Special citizens who have made important contributions
to the community were recognized at the 14th annual Town of Aurora
Civic Award Investiture at the Town Hall on Wednesday night. Town
councillors, members of the public and award winners gathered
in the council chambers to view the ceremony.
The prestigious Bob Harman Memorial Award went to Paul Gouda
for his dedication and devotion to the Town of Aurora's Youth
Soccer Club. He was responsible for the incorporation of the club
in 1980 when it had about 250 children; now the club boasts 1,150
children.
A Special Recognition Award went to the Aurora Eagles hockey
team who won the Ontario Junior B East Division Championships
over their archrivals Barrie Colts.
The Outstanding Achievement Award for a non-profit organization
went to the Aurora Lions Club (which received its Chapter in May,
1944) for its years of service to the community.
Sue Simmins, of the Aurora Chapter of the Heart and Stroke Foundation,
was given the Outstanding Achievement Award for an Individual
for her role in the Foundation's work in Aurora over the last
ten years.
The Volunteer Service Award was given to Bruce Somerville for
his important contributions to quality library services in the
town.
Susan Walker-Ing was described
as "the lady of Aurora that has made a dream of many artists a
reality" and for her work with and for artists in the area since
the 70s she received the Johnson's Cultural Achievement Award.
Youth Volunteer Service Awards went to Dr. G.W. Williams High
School students Renee Gallant and Sherri Owen for their devoted
service to that school.
The Dr. G.W. Williams Senior Band was recognized with a Civic
Appreciation Award for the national calibre music they've been
producing the past few years under the guidance of their conductors
Penny Sedore and Daniel Johnson.
Civic Awards were given to Tanya Constable and Cindy Masella
for receiving their Canada Cord in Guides. Civic Appreciation
Awards also went to: Bill Bridel for his outstanding achievements
in figure skating; Gary Charity for his gold medal in the Pairs
Team Ontario Championship in Lawn Bowling; James Hevesi for winning
the all-round title at the 1991 Ontario Provincial Men's Gymnastics
Championships in the cadet category for boys 10 years and younger;
and Joseph Eigo for his outstanding achievements in gymnastics
at both the provincial and national levels.
